A Labour Party stalwart, Chief Dr. Emeka Charles Kalu, has called on members and supporters of the party across Nigeria to close ranks and remain united as preparations gather momentum for the 2027 general elections.

Dr. Kalu who threw the challenge in a statement titled “A Call for Unity to All Labour Party Patriots Ahead of the 2027 Elections,” stressed that unity would be essential if the party hopes to build on its performance in the 2023 elections and effectively challenge the ruling party at the centre in the next electoral cycle.

According to Bende L.G.A Abia State born renowned entrepreneur and philanthropist, the Labour Party was founded on the aspirations of millions of Nigerians seeking a nation anchored on justice, accountability, competence and equal opportunity.

He noted that the party’s performance in the 2023 general elections demonstrated that many Nigerians, particularly the young people remain eager for a new political direction despite the party’s relatively limited resources and emerging political structure.

Dr. Kalu, however, cautioned that internal divisions, personal ambitions and factional interests could undermine the party’s chances of success if not properly managed and urged party members to prioritize the collective interest above individual considerations and to resolve disagreements through dialogue and mutual respect.

He equally observed that the ruling party has already begun preparations for the 2027 elections and noted that incumbency remains a significant advantage in Nigeria’s political landscape while arguing that only a united and well-organized Labour Party would be positioned to compete effectively for elective offices, including the presidency, governorships, the National and States Assembly seats as well as the Local Government Councils.

The Labour Party chieftain went on to outline several priorities for the party ahead of the elections, including strengthening party structures from the ward to the national level, expanding membership registration and grassroots mobilization, supporting credible candidates with proven integrity and competence, promoting issue-based campaigns, defending democratic processes, advocating electoral reforms to improve transparency and increasing the participation of young people, women, professionals, artisans, market traders and other Nigerians interested in political change.
