Democracy Day Celebration: Abia DMO Chief Demands Accountability And Active Engagement From Citizens

The General Manager of the Abia State Debt Management Office (DMO), Dr. K.O Nwaigburu, has urged citizens of Nigeria to embrace accountability, transparency, and active participation in governance as it is the surest path to sustainable development.

Dr. Nwaigburu made gave the advice in a public statement he put out as Nigeria celebrated her Democracy Day on June 12.

The university who is also a member of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Business School described the occasion as a reminder that government exists to serve the people by strengthening institutions of governance rather than building strong individuals.

“As a major stakeholder in the Abia project, I believe our democracy grows stronger when every kobo meant for the public is accounted for and the citizens understand how decisions affect their lives,”

The Abia DMO General Manager, noted that prudent spending of resources and debt management under the leadership of Governor Dr. Alex Otti in Abia State is designed to protect future generations while funding projects that deliver real value to Abians.

Dr. Nwaigburu emphasized that transparency in public finance is a democratic duty and not an option.

“At the Debt Management Office, His Excellency’s mandate is very clear, to borrow responsibly, to repay promptly, and report openly. When citizens know where money comes from and where it goes, trust between the government and the people deepens,” he stated.

He commended the Dr. Alex Otti administration for its commitment to publishing fiscal data and engaging stakeholders adequately, describing it as a model for democratic governance in Nigeria.

Dr. Nwaigburu also called on Abians to see themselves as active partners in democracy, not mere observers, pointing out that Democracy thrives when people ask questions, perform their civic duties which include paying taxes as when due, participating in electoral processes which are avenues to hold leaders accountable.

He therefore enjoined all citizens and residents of Abia to use this year’s Democracy Day commemoration to renew their pledge and build a state where integrity and development work hand in glove.
